Mercat de l'Olivar
Mercat de l’Olivar, established in 1951, is not just Palma's largest food market; it's a vibrant hub of traditional Mallorcan culture, culinary delights, and a lively spot for a casual lunch.
Nestled in the heart of Palma, at Plaça de l'Olivar, this market is a testament to the city's rich heritage and contemporary lifestyle.
A Market with History and Local Charm
I really enjoy good local food, so there's no wonder I'm a big fan of Mercat de l’Olivar. It’s also a local favorite, bustling with families and individuals sourcing their daily provisions.
The market encapsulates the essence of Spanish culture, reminiscent of the local's childhood memories of market visits with their mother.
A Kaleidoscope of Fresh Produce and Artisanal Goods
The market is a feast for the senses, with vivid displays of fruits and vegetables, many sourced from local farms.
It's a haven for cheese enthusiasts, boasting a selection of over 400 international and local cheeses. I really love cheese and could stay here for hours.
Traditional Mallorcan products like Sobrassada sausage, local almonds, and olive oil are also some of the market's highlights.
Gourmet Experiences and Culinary Delights
Eating in is a delightful experience at Mercat de l’Olivar. From tasting cheese to enjoying 'platos variados' (mixed dishes), the market caters to all tastes.
There's also a sweet shop and an array of desserts, including the famous Mallorcan almond cake and ensaimada.
Diverse Shopping and Dining Options
Beyond food, the market offers a plethora of items like earthenware, olive wood objects, and Mallorcan textiles. The fish market section, with fresh catches straight from the fisherman, is particularly noteworthy.
Trendy raw fish bars, an oyster bar, sushi bars, and a prawn bar provide a modern twist to the traditional market setting. Since being on an island, the fresh fish is really amazing!
Convenient and Accessible
The market's location in the city center, close to major landmarks, makes it easily accessible. It provides facilities like lifts and escalators for comfortable movement, and there’s ample parking.
The market operates from Monday to Saturday, offering convenient shopping hours.

Well recommended as a place to visit to mooch and to enjoy tapas & cava! Amazing food market for cheeses, hams, chorizo, fish, wine and to eat too!
Found the market vendors friendly and helpful. The seasonal products and stables offer a good idea what families are eating. Found some new recipes to bring home. There is a nice plaza outside along with smaller shops and eateries.
What a fantastic way to spend a cloudy Saturday afternoon or even a sunny one! Such a variety of stalls, tapas bars. Locals doing their shopping, people watching.....the list goes on. Just great to go from one stand to another sampling the tapas with a wee drink at each . Very easy to forget what time of the day it is.
